Rick Reuschel for the Hall of Fame

Cyril Morong sent me an article he had written a few years ago for Chicago Sports Review and reposted on his blog, Cybermetrics.  It's a really good article and shows just how good Reuschel was in his career.  I'm not going to quote much, but I'll quote this just to show you how good.

-His strike-out-to-walk ratio was 31% better than the league average

-He gave up 21.6% fewer HRs than average

In the categories we consider the pitcher to have the most control of (home runs, walks and strikeouts), Reuschel was a damn good pitcher.

Morong's research has been linked on the sidebar here under Sabermetrics for a long time now.  He's done some great work.  My favorites are the "small-ball" studies.  Not too surprisingly, the so-called productive outs aren't very productive.
